"Would you kill to save a life?"
Zali clenched her right hand until the hilt of her blade dug into her skin. Her gaze observed the man who spoke and she stepped to the side, shielding the young boy behind her with her body.
"I have killed for far less than saving lives. Money, food, jewels – my life," Zali said. "A life seems like fair payment to add to that list."
"So you would switch sides again." Karle stretched his arm towards her, a curved blade in his hand. "He has nothing to offer you, cannot pay you."
"Should something happen to you, he will be the future king." Her feet led her closer to him. "He will grow older, learning and knowing about the woman who saved his life and whom he is indebted to."
"That is what you want?" Karle shook his head, expression dark. "You know you cannot defeat me."
Her lips curled into a bitter smile. Invisible creatures crept towards her, hidden from the light, thriving in the shadows. They granted her power and she accepted it, allowed the tendrils of raw magic to slip into her veins. A quick glance over her shoulder showed her the boy, huddled in a corner, face hidden behind his arms.
Him, or Karle. One would die.
Zali's gaze sharpened as she took one step closer to Karle.
"We'll see!"
She lashed out.

Irrelevant Advice
My great-grandfather used to tell me, "Don't chase after trees because you'll only end up with a paddle in your thumb." I never quite understood his advice until one halloween, I was gardening with my best friend Sally. All of a sudden, we found an underground tunnel! It was dastardly and spooky sounds came from deep within. Sally saw something interesting inside, jumped in, and I never saw her again. Great-granddaddy was right!

Shoulda listened!
My great-grandfather used to tell me, "Don't chase after fridges because you'll only end up with a box in your forehead." I never quite understood his advice until one Midsummer, I was gardening with my best friend Tanya. All of a sudden, we found an underground tunnel! It was hairy and spooky sounds came from deep within. Tanya saw something interesting inside, jumped in, and I never saw her again. Great-granddaddy was right!

Day 2 of Flash Fiction Month, another story about Zali and Karle - the two main characters in a novel I started planning recently. As recent as this past week, no less.
Oh, the issues they have. It's so much fun.
Whereas Day 1's story was more towards the beginning of the book, this story takes place closer to the end of the novel. We'll see how it goes once I write it properly!
Comments are greatly appreciated.

Aw, I hope Zali doesn't die. I like what I've seen of her so far. Karle is, of course, Karle. So smug and bad-boy. Haha. I'm curious to see this story once you've finished it.
